MOVE or Managing & Organising
Volunteer Efforts is a group of active practitioners of volunteer
management who have come together to further the development of their
practice into a profession.
It all started in March 2005
when a group of Volunteer Programme Managers (VPMs) attended a
discussion group meeting headed by Susan Ellis of Energize Inc held here
in Singapore. Also present were representatives from National Volunteer
& Philanthropy Centre (NVPC), Singapore International Foundation (SIF)
and the National Council of Social Service (NCSS).
Three persons present at
the meeting shared similar visions of a united body of VPMs in the
country. At the end of that session, Ms Lam Moy Yin of NVPC, Ms Lydia
Ang of SIF and Mr Michael Loh who was then the Volunteer Coordinator of
Dover Park Hospice made a pact to come together for further
discussions. Hence in that same year, the mechanism for the formation
of a national body representing VPMs in Singapore was put in place. An
open space discussion was conducted on 4 June 2005 and the results of
the deliberation supported the need for a national body for Singapore
VPMs.
After many months of hard work,
a protem committee comprising of ten like-minded people from the
industry was formed on 19 May 2006. The constitution of the
organisation was written by Mr Michael Loh and adopted by the protem
committee who elected him as its Founding Chairman.
MOVE was eventually registered
with the Registry of Societies on 4 July 2006 and launched on 13
July 2006 in conjunction with VConnect organised by the NVPC.
The realisation of MOVE would
not have been possible had it not been for the strong support from many
people. The NVPC has been extremely supportive of MOVE during its
embryonic stage and we are confident that it will continue to be our
pillar of support from our infancy right up to adulthood. In
furtherance of its vision and mission, MOVE will continue to establish
other community partnerships.
